This particular position is designated by order of the court to be "representative of the poor and needy in the County of Marin ." The Marin County Board of Supervisors will appoint a qualified individual for a four year term, which begins in October of 2006.

Marin Grassroots Leadership Conference 2006

Key components of the Marin Grassroots Leadership Conference include:
• Three special workshop sessions in which some of the issues to be discussed are transportation, environmental health and justice, affordable housing, fair community development, community benefits agreements, and education equity.
• Interactive plenary sessions where panelists from different community organizations discuss successes, challenges, and ways to better address civic participation to build communities' political power.
The Conference will serve as a key opportunity for community leaders, activists and residents to network, exchange ideas and suggest improvements that will foster better communication, increased understanding, and greater cooperation while stimulating and renewing our commitment to sustain a movement for equity and justice.
Registration fee is $25 for individuals, $ 50 for organizations, and includes breakfast, lunch, and an one-year membership with Marin Grassroots Leadership Network. Nobody will be turned away due to lack of funds.

Redwood Landfill Expansion
Hearing on Final Environmental Impact Report
on the Redwood Landfill by Marin County Planning Commission. Room 328, Marin Civic Center, 3501 Civic Center Dr. This hearing is the next rallying point to oppose expansion of the Redwood Landfill (just north of Novato in our northeastern wetlands). It will be extremely important for members of the Novato community to attend in support of the local coalition that is battling Goliath, i.e., Waste Management Inc. Please note that this date is tentative, and that this hearing has already been rescheduled several times. Next month's Awareness Newsletter will have an update on the hearing and the date. No Wetlands Landfill Expansion is a concerned citizen's watchdog group created to review Redwood Landfill's proposed expansion in Novato, along the Petaluma marsh. This expansion is of critical concern for residents of Marin and Sonoma counties and environmentalists throughout the Bay Area. It will negatively impact the environment and surrounding communities. Citizen input and support is essential during the environmental review and permit process. Expansion of the landfill will turn it into a state regional dump to increase Waste Management, Inc.'s big corporate profits. It will result in a substantial increase of large truck traffic on highway 101 and increase the risk of degrading surrounding wetlands as well as air and odor pollution throughout Novato and surrounding areas.

Sidney Blumenthal, the former assistant and senior adviser to President Clinton, will discuss his latest book, How Bush Rules: Chronicles of a Radial Regime. The book takes readers through pivotal events such as the hunt for Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, the rise of the foreign-policy neoconservatives, Abu Ghraib, the war on science, the Jack Abramoff scandal, and the catastrophic mishandling of Hurricane Katrina. It tracks a consistent policy that calls for the president to have complete authority over independent federal agencies and to remain unbound by congressional oversight -- or even the law. "INNOCENT VOICES"
FOCUSES ON 1980s EL SALVADOR
A recently-produced film depicts the realities of the civil war which raged in El Salvador in 1980. There were many victims, but one special group, twelve year-old boys, had a particular cause for fear. That's the age when El Salvador's Army would seize them and train them to kill their own people. This is the true story of one boy, Chava (Carlos Padilla), who represents his generation's "Innocent Voices." The film is in Spanish with English subtitles.
Special Guest speaker Tanya Snyder will give an update on the current situation in El Salvador and will discuss the upcoming 15th anniversary of the signing of the Peace Accords to end one of the most painful chapters in the history of El Salvador.
Ms. Snyder is the Executive Director of the Washington DC-based Voices on the Border. Her organization works in solidarity with the rural poor by promoting sustainable and equitable development through small projects and facilitating community partnerships between the US and El Salvador.
The program will be held at The Redwoods Presbyterian Church, 110 Magnolia Avenue, Larkspur. This presentation is sponsored by the Marin Interfaith Task Force on the Americas. A $5-10 donation is requested; however, no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
